The Hangover 2 and Kung Fu Panda 2 make this the biggest Memorial Day box office ever

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

If you saw THE HANGOVER PART II over the weekend and you’re disappointed both with the film and the fact it’s on pace to earn nearly $140 million for the five day weekend (starting on Thursday), then keep in mind that the success of the sequel is almost 100% dependent on the success of the first and given how much people loved the original, it’s not surprising the film is doing so well.  But even I’m a little surprised by the fact it will probably become one of, if not the, biggest comedies of all time.  The film was helped by some great midnight numbers that probably would have been higher without the NBA finals.  I’m also surprised that coupled with KUNG FU PANDA 2’s $68 million, this weekend will be the biggest Memorial Day weekend of all time.  It’s a little sad to note that 4 of the top 6 movies are sequels.

Next week sees the release of my most anticipated movie of the summer, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, which has gotten some great early reviews.  The race for #1 should be close next weekend between THE HANGOVER PART II and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, but I’m betting X-Men will prevail.  Note: the numbers below are for the 3 day weekend.  Memorial day weekend numbers will be updated on Monday.

Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms in The Hangover 2

1. The Hangover Part II $85m

2. Kung Fu Panda 2 $47.5m

3. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides $42m

4. Bridesmaids $16.2m

5. Thor $8.5m

6. Fast Five $5.8m

7. Priest $2m

8. Jumping The Broom $1.8m

9. Rio $1.8m

10. Midnight in Paris $1.7m
