The Hangover Part II shatters box office records, set to become biggest R-rated comedy of all time

We already knew THE HANGOVER PART II took the biggest Memorial Day weekend box office of all time, but what we didn’t know was just how many records the sequel was going to shatter along the way.  For starters, it now has the biggest R-rated midnight showing ever ($10.4m, beating PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2’s $6.3m), the biggest 3 day weekend opening for a comedy ($86m, beating THE SIMPSONS’ $74m) and it now has the record for the playing in the most number of screens for an R-rated movie with over 3,615 screens playing the film.  When it’s all said and done, it looks like THE HANGOVER PART II will pull in over $137m in just five days, which is pretty remarkable for an R-rated movie not playing in 3D.

So what does all this mean?  For starters, means THE HANGOVER PART III is coming sooner than we thought.  But hopefully this will give studios motivation to take chances on R-rated movies rather than dumbing everything down for a PG-13 audience.  Not that THE HANGOVER PART II is a good example, but quality, original R-rated content can be successful.   THE HANGOVER PART II stars Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms.
