The Help beats The Debt and Shark Night 3D at the weekend box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Who would have thought that a little movie about race relations in the South would be #1 at the box office for three weekends in a row?  That’s exactly what THE HELP has done, this time beating out all the newcomers at the box office.  THE DEBT, APOLLO 18 and SHARK NIGHT 3D have been battling for second place all weekend, but all three of them are barely pulling in $11 million a piece.  The summer is officially over.  However, out of the three new movies this weekend, I’m glad THE DEBT is doing the best.  APOLLO 18 is learning that it takes more than just a nifty idea to make a good horror/sci-fi movie and SHARK NIGHT 3D is learning that people love campy horror movies, but sometimes it’s best to go straight to DVD.

Next week sees the release of Steven Soderbergh’s CONTAGION and the Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton MMA movie WARRIOR.  Both movies seem to be a huge hit with critics, so hopefully one of them will knock THE HELP from the top spot.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer in The Help

1. The Help $18m

2. The Debt $12m

3. Apollo 18 $11m

4. Shark Night 3D $11m

5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes $10m

6. Colombiana $10m

7. Our Idiot Brother $6.5m

8. Spy Kids 4D $6.3m

9. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark $6m

10. The Smurfs $5m
