The King’s Speech beats out The Social Network at the Producers Guild Awards

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Well, well, well, isn’t this an interesting development?  Just when we were ready to hand over the Best Picture Academy Award to THE SOCIAL NETWORK, THE KING’S SPEECH sweeps in and steals an award.  It seems every critics society and awards circuit has dubbed THE SOCIAL NETWORK best picture, but leave it up to the Producers Guild to change that.  Along with Speech, TOY STORY 3 won best animated feature and WAITING FOR SUPERMAN won best documentary.  The Producers Guild doesn’t hand out acting awards.

Not that this will be any indication, but 14 of the past 21 winners of the Producers Guild Award have gone on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.  Of course, if you go through all the awards and critics societies, almost all of them claim that they’re winner goes on to win the Academy Award.  Of course, every year there are usually only a couple of movies in the running, so the odds are good every society will be over 50%.
