The Rite takes the box office while The Mechanic needs fixing

This many years after the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS films, I’m surprised that Anthony Hopkins can still open a horror movie, especially one that was panned as much as THE RITE.  But leave it to the 73 year-old Hopkins to surprise everyone once again.  Of course, it didn’t hurt that Warner Brothers had a surprisingly large marketing push for the exorcism-horror film.  The surprise disappointment was Jason Statham’s THE MECHANIC, which barely managed to crack the top 5.  I think most people like watching Jason Statham kick and punch his way through a movie, but he doesn’t seem to have the broad appeal of the action stars of the 80’s.  Last week’s #1 film, NO STRINGS ATTACHED, managed to keep most of its audience and hang on to the second spot.

Next week is an unusually slow week as far as new releases with nothing but the 3D film SANCTUM hitting theaters in a wide release.  After Cameron slammed the cheap 3D effects in PIRANHA, I’m surprised he was willing to put his name on SANCTUM.  The next “big” movie doesn’t hit theaters until the following week when Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston team up for JUST GO WITH IT.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Anthony Hopkins in The Rite

1. The Rite $15m

2. No Strings Attached $13.3m

3. The Green Hornet $11.5m

4. The Mechanic $11.8m

5. The King’s Speech $11.1m

6. True Grit $7.3m

7. The Dilemma $6.1m

8. Black Swan $5.3m

9. The Fighter $4.2m

10. Yogi Bear $3m
