The Roommate beats Sanctum at the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

On last night’s Saturday Night Live, they did a skit o THE ROOMMATE, but this time it starred Justin Bieber and Andy Samberg.  I have to say, after watching that and watching the real trailer for THE ROOMMATE with Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly, I’d rather watch the SNL version.  But apparently there were many people in the world that wanted to see a friend-turned-obsessive pseudo-horror film as THE ROOMMATE managed to grab the top spot at the box office this weekend. The other film opening up was the James Cameron produced SANCTUM, which was nothing but a giant 3D gimmick.  But audiences didn’t seem to mind as it took the second spot at the box office.

Next weekend will probably belong to Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston as their JUST GO WITH IT opens up.  I’m not Sandler’s biggest fan, but the trailer for this had me laughing a few times, so maybe it will be decent.  But it will have some competition from Justin Bieber in JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER and maybe a little bit from Channing Tatum in THE EAGLE.  The latter of which was horribly marketed despite looking like a halfway decent historical epic.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly in The Roommate

1. The Roommate $15.5m

2. Sanctum $9.7m

3. No Strings Attached $8m

4. The King’s Speech $7.5m

5. The Green Hornet $6.2m

6. The Rite $5.8m

7. The Mechanic $5.1m

8. True Grit $4.7m

9. The Dilemma $3.4m

10. Black Swan $3.4m
