The Social Network holds off Life As We Know It for #1 at the box office

I expected SECRETARIAT to be #1 at the box office this weekend and I promised myself I wouldn’t make any horse racing puns to describe the box office race.  However, SECRETARIAT drastically underperformed this Columbus Day weekend, so I don’t have to worry about it.  The horse racing flick barely managed a third place showing and was overpowered by last week’s holdover THE SOCIAL NETWORK and Katherine Heigl’s latest rom-com.  Overall, it was a slow weekend with the top movie pulling in a measly $15 million.  The horror movie of the weekend came in fifth place with Wes Craven’s grand return to horror, MY SOUL TO TAKE coming in a distant fifth.

Next week could be a better weekend with RED and JACKASS 3D battling for the top spot.  I’m curious to see if Johnny Knoxville and the JACKASS crew still have a fan base since it has been a long time since we’ve seen them in action.  Of course, I’m also curious to see what RED manages to do since I’m guessing a lot of Americans don’t want to see four 50+ year-old actors running around doing action stunts.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. The Social Network $15.2m

2. Life As We Know It $14.6m
