The Tourist and The Chronicles of Narnia disappoint at the box office

It seems like Hollywood executives are surprised that THE TOURIST and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER underperformed at the box office, but I think the films performed right on track to most fans expectations. The first Narnia film was new and exciting, but each subsequent film has been disappointing and poorly directed. I’m sure taking away some budget and switching studios didn’t help Dawn Treader very much. As for THE TOURIST, I’m surprised it managed to make $17 million. That’s a credit to the star power of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie because without them, the film would have gone straight to DVD.
We’re still in the Oscar overload season and people are dying to see movies like THE FIGHTER and BLACK SWAN, which continues to do well despite only playing in a few theaters. Next week sees the opening of TRON: LEGACY, which might be the wild-card of the year. It looks like fun in the trailers, but I’m not sure anyone actually wants to see a sequel like that. We also have HOW DO YOU KNOW and YOGI BEAR.

2. The Tourist $17.5m
3. Tangled $15m

9. Megamind $2.7m
10. Due Date $2.5m
