The Vow and Safe House battle in a surprisingly strong weekend box office

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams in The Vow

In a race that’s still too early to call, the overly sappy romantic film starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, THE VOW, is going toe to toe with the Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington action film SAFE HOUSE.  I think most people would find that to be expected, but what’s not expected is that each film would be pushing $40 million.  Not only that, but the 3D re-release of STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 – THE PHANTOM MENACE and JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND are both set to pull in over $20 million.  That makes four “new” movies opening with more than $20 million each on one non-holiday weekend.  I’m amazed that these four would be the ones to pull it off, especially the 3D re-release of Star Wars.  George Lucas is probably doing an evil laugh while rolling around in a pile of money right now.

THE VOW has a good shot at winning next weekend as well, since the only remotely romantic film opening up next week is THIS MEANS WAR, which looks almost unwatchable.  And don’t forget GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE, which sees Nicolas Cage back in action as the reluctant superhero.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1.The Vow $41m

2. Safe House $39m

3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island $27m

4. Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace 3D $23m

5. Chronicle $12m

6. The Woman in Black $10.4m

7. The Grey $5m

8. Big Miracle $3.7m

9. The Descendants $3.4m

10. Underworld: Awakening $2.5m
