Thor hammers past Fast Five for first place at the box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

As expected, THOR hammered it’s way to the top spot at the box office.  Some might say it was God-like in it’s performance over the weekend, or that it took in revenue at a lightning-fast pace.  Does that cover all the cheesy puns that people are sure to make in the next couple of days?  The real question is whether or not THOR can retain any of its audience from the previous week.  Even though I wasn’t a huge fan (read my THOR review), it has gotten mostly positive reviews.  Anyway, last week’s #1 film, FAST FIVE also managed to do pretty well, giving THOR at least a little bit of a chase (I can’t help myself).  But the counter-marketing efforts of SOMETHING BORROWED have paid off since the film finished fourth with a decent showing, especially given the competition.

Next week sees the release of BRIDESMAIDS and if you’re on the fence about whether to check it out on opening weekend, let me tell you that it is absolutely hilarious.  I don’t usually recommend watching movies with a large audience, but this is a movie that will get a reaction from crowds.  We also have PRIEST hitting the big screen and it begs the question; why does Paul Bettany choose these religious themed movies?  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Chris Hemsworth in Thor

1. Thor $66

2. Fast Five $35

3. Jumping The Broom $13.5

4. Something Borrowed $13.4

5. Rio $9.5

6. Water For Elephants $5.7

7. Madea’s Big Happy Family $3.8

8. Prom $2.5

9. Hoodwinked Too $2.2

10. Soul Surfer $2.1
