Tom Cruise and director Rupert Sanders might team for Van Helsing

Tom Cruise

It’s hard to muster anything but a shrug when reading the news that Universal still wants to try to reboot their Van Helsing franchise.  I get a little excited at the prospect of Tom Cruise taking over the lead, only because I have confidence he’ll ensure it gets made properly.  But I don’t find Van Helsing that interesting of a character and I feel like Hugh Jackman’s take on the monster hunting hero was about as good as it’s going to get (which isn’t very good at all).  Adding SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN director Rupert Sanders to the mix doesn’t do anything to change my mind.  He had a hit with Snow White, but for Van Helsing to really work, I would have liked for Universal to stick with their first choice, Guillermo del Toro.

Anyway, Universal has hired TRANSFORMERS scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to write the script and they claim their take will be much more grounded and dark than the 2004 movie.  We’ll see.  Everything is still very early in development and neither Sanders or Cruise have signed onto anything.  (Twitch)
