Tom Cruise is eying a remake of The Magnificent Seven
I’ve stood by Tom Cruise a long time, even through his crazy couch jumping days, weird Scientoloy stuff and even KNIGHT AND DAY. So I was as pleased as could be when Tom Cruise redeemed himself with the incredible MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL. With the huge success of that film, TC now has his pick of movie roles and now you can add a remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (which is actually a take on Akira Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI) on the list. Yep, one genre that Tom Cruise hasn’t dabbled in yet is a Western and this could be the film that prompts him to put his cowboy boots on. And before you start arguing, yes, I’m aware that Tom Cruise had a brief cameo in YOUNG GUNS, but no matter how hard I look, I can’t find him, but he’s supposedly in the final shootout.
Anyway, Tom Cruise is eying the project that will be set up at MGM, which seems destined to remake every film in their library (RED DAWN is still on the way). Everything is still in the extreme early stages right now, so we’re not even sure if this remake will be a Western or some variation of the story set in a different time. Either way, I’m not sure I understand why Tom Cruise would be interested in a film like this. Let’s face it; if you put Tom Cruise in a film and want him to star with other people, it’s just not going to work. I guess THE AVENGERS proves that anything is possible, but that wold mean you’d have to surround Tom Cruise with some serious A-list talent like an OCEAN’S 11 reunion. Again, great idea, but I don’t think MGM wants to spend that kind of dough to pull it off. (Variety)
