Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough and Alec Baldwin rock out in the new Rock of Ages trailer
I’m a huge Tom Cruise fan, I enjoy musicals and I’m an 80’s music junkie, so on paper, ROCK OF AGES was made for people like me. But something about mixing all of these ingredients doesn’t quite work, at least not in the two trailers we’ve seen so far. It’s like mixing ice cream, sushi and Mountain Dew. Sure, they’re all great individually, but eating them together and you’d throw up, which is kind of the reaction I’m expecting when I sit down to watch ROCK OF AGES. But I like the fact that Tom Cruise is stretching himself in the role and showcasing a side of him we’ve never seen before. Whether or not it works is another story. But you can’t help but feel something watching Tom Cruise belt out the classic Bon Jovi tune ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’. As Alec Baldwin says in the trailer regarding Tom Cruise’s Stacee Jaxx, “he gives until it hurts”.
The film itself is about a small town girl looking to make it big who encounters several shady characters, including the owner of a rock club, who is counting on a big performance from rock superstar Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) to bring some much needed attention/money to the club. But the young girl is hoping to become a superstar herself, along with her rock-star wannabe boyfriend. We’ve seen this basic plot before, most recently in BURLESQUE, but this time we have real actors (kind of) and 80’s music. And, of course, it has Tom Cruise, which is something every movie could use, but not necessarily musicals.
ROCK OF AGES has an all-star cast that includes Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman, Mary J. Blige, Catherine Zeta-jones and Bryan Cranston. The Adam Shankman directed film hits theaters everywhere this summer on June 15th .
