Tom Cruise may play Jack Reacher in Chrisopher McQuarrie's One Shot

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are currently negotiating with Tom Cruise to star in ONE SHOT which will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie. The film will be adapted on the Lee Child book series about a former military policeman turned drifter, Jack Reacher. Talks are taking place now so that this film can be fit in Cruise’s schedule before he stars in Joseph Kosinski’s OBLIVION. However, if the negotiations from the deal span out too long, OBLIVION would be filmed first.

Fans of the book series may not be too happy about Cruise as the main character though. The differences between the two phyiscally are rather great–Reacher is 6’5″, 250 pounds. As everyone knows, the actor is much smaller than that. The book’s author, Child feels like Cruise is a perfect fit to the role and that he was never locked into having an oversize actor take the part. In fact, Child said this about Cruise, “Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way.”

The plot of ONE SHOT is this: “Reacher investigates a case in which a lone sniper murders five victims before being captured. Reacher discovers it’s more than a simple open-and-shut case.” Reacher is described as a character who is no-frills and carries only what he needs on his journey around the country. When the situation turns rough, Reacher not only uses his strength but his intelligence to defeat an opponent.
