Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock in the Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close trailer

I think sometimes directors look at 9/11 as a challenge. Making a movie a mere 10 years after the tragedy is a tough task and one that has had very mixed results. On one hand, I applaud directors for taking a chance and tryin to honor the tragedy, but on the other hand, I kind of wish they’d leave it alone. But the next director attempting to cover the subject matter in an appropriate manner is Stephen Daldry, who previously directed THE HOURS and BILLY ELLIOT. The film is called EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE and is about a boy that loses his father during the attacks on the World Trade Center and the subsequent journey the boy goes on when he finds a key his father left behind.
I can’t say I’m impressed by the trailer, but it felt like it was trying a little too hard. The film stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, James Gandolfini, Viola Davis, Max Von Sydow, Jeffrey Wright and Thomas Horn. It opens everywhere on January 20th, but will probably receive a limited release in time for awards season.
