Tom Hanks stars in the impressive first Captain Phillips trailer

Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips

If I was going to redo my ten most anticipated movies of 2013 list, I would add CAPTAIN PHILLIPS to the top of the list, based solely off of this trailer.  I’ve missed Tom Hanks in these type of Oscar-worthy performances.  Sure, I loved CLOUD ATLAS, but his role as the captain of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama is the type of meaty role that I wish Tom Hanks would do every year, but really hasn’t done since SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.  The film is based off the true story of the Alabama, which was the first US ship in over 200 years to be hijacked by pirates.  Captain Phillips gained national notoriety when it was revealed he gave himself in exchange for the safety of his crew.

Oh, and the film is directed by Paul Greengrass, whose last effort, GREEN ZONE, was a bit of a disappointment.  Thankfully, it looks like Greengrass is getting back to good stories as well and taking a break from Matt Damon could probably do him some good, although I do hope he and Damon return to the Bourne franchise at some point.  In the meantime, if CAPTAIN PHILLIPS turns out to be half as good as the trailer promises, I think Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass could be busy guys come awards season.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS stars Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, Max Martini and John Magaro.  The Paul Greengrass directed film will hit theaters everywhere on October 11th.
