Tom Hardy in talks to play Al Capone in Cicero for Harry Potter director David Yates

Warner Brothers has a flurry of announcements, or near-announcements as the case may be, this morning, but none are more interesting than the prospect of an all out Al Capone gangster film trilogy.  If they get their way, Tom Hardy will star in the films which chronicle Al Capone’s meteoric rise to the top of the gangster world and his long tenure running the Chicago underworld.  But not satisfied with having Hollywood’s it-boy, WB also wants the director of the last few Harry Potter films, David Yates, to helm the first movie.

Neither Hardy nor Yates have signed on to the film, but WB typically gets what they want and it’s probably just a matter of time.  But after the mad money that HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 is sure to bring in, Yates will have his pick of films and supposedly, he’s also eying the graphic novel adaptation FABLES and the dramatic THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU.  But with Harry Potter and Batman coming to a close in the next 12 months, WB needs another franchise and Cicero is as good as any.
