The top ten movies of 2013 – Brad’s list

3. CAPTAIN PHILLIPS – Tom Hanks has a way of making a movie better, just by giving an incredible performance.  It has been almost 10 years since we’ve seen him at the top of his game, but it was well worth the wait.  Hanks gives the performance of the year as the sea captain taken hostage by Somali pirates.

Inside Llewyn Davis top ten list

2. INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS – The Coen Brothers are hit and miss with me and I really can’t explain why I loved INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS but hated A SERIOUS MAN (for example).  Maybe I connected more with Llewyn or maybe it was the great folk music, but there’s something about INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS that wowed me.  I’m shocked that I’ve had to defend this movie to so many people, but I’m still hoping it gets some love from the Academy.

Sandra Bullock in Gravity F

1. GRAVITY – The grand spectacle of GRAVITY is worth the price of admission, but if you pause to look a little deeper, you’ll realize that there’s a great story in here as well.  It’s helped by the tireless performance of Sandra Bullock, but the star of the movie is the direction of Alfonso Cuaron.  He should be applauded for bringing this to the big screen and pulling it off so beautifully.

Movies that came close, but didn’t make the cut: AMERICAN HUSTLE, THE GREAT GATSBY, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, PHILOMENA, FRUITVALE STATION, THIS IS THE END
