The top ten movies still to come in 2013

2013 is shaping up to be a pretty good year. We’ve seen some smaller gems like STOKER, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES and BEFORE MIDNIGHT. True stories like RUSH and CAPTAIN PHILLIPS were effectively powerful. Pixar hit strong again with MONSTERS UNIVERSITY. And the grand daddy of them all GRAVITY blew all the competition out of the water with a deeply layered special effect extravaganza. With two months of hard hitting Oscar worthy films yet to come out, lets take a look at the top ten movies still to come in 2013. Click the title to watch the corresponding trailer.
11. MONUMENTS MEN – George Clooney puts together an incredible cast including Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, and John Goodman. A film that combines the Academy’s love for WWII pics with the praising of art would regularly have Oscar written all over it, however Mr. Clooney just recently announced that he’s pushing it back to 2014 to better figure out the tone of the film. I originally had this at number 2, but with that crazy date move I have to keep it just off the list. (Jan. 2014)
10. INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS – I can’t say I’m terribly excited about this look at the 1961 music scene but I’m sure the Joel and Ethan Coen will give a unique and interesting perspective. And because of them I probably should be excited about the film and therefore INSIDE LLEWNY DAVIS lands just outside the list. Never bet against the Coen Brothers (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, FARGO, O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? and countless others) who seem to always find themselves in the good graces of the Academy. (Dec. 20)
9. THE BOOK THIEF – This is an adaption of one of my wife and I’s absolute favorite novels. Told through the eyes of death during the Holocaust, THE BOOK THIEF somehow has been made very quietly and I fear may be a bit polished and rushed without the sensative treatment the best selling novel deserves. But I am hopeful and eagerly await to see this powerful story in theater. (Nov. 8)
8. THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY – Ben Stiller fantasizing about adventure and romance seems like a recipe for great time at the theater. Hopefully the film can balance the line of laughs and drama. (Dec. 25)
