Toy Story 3 continues its box office dominance, Grown Ups finishes strong

This weekend seems to be an unusually heavily scrutinized weekend, only because it features a summer opening Tom Cruise move without “Mission Impossible” in the title. His latest film, KNIGHT AND DAY, finished with $20.5 million ($28 since Wednesday), which was good enough for third place in a busy weekend. Some will point to that number and say it’s a failure, but I see it as a victory given the tired storyline and the stiff competition. The top movie of the weekend was TOY STORY 3, which continued its impressive run with another $58 million. But maybe the most surprising movie of the weekend was GROWN UPS, which proves Adam Sandler is still box office gold, despite only appearing in maybe 4 movies that are actually watchable.
It’s good TOY STORY 3 did well this weekend, because next weekend it will be crushed by the unstoppable machine known as TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE. I’m not seeing any broken records in its future, but it will obviously make crazy cash.
1 Toy Story 3 $58.9 million
2 Grown Ups $41 million
3 Knight and Day $20.5 million
4 The Karate Kid $15.4 million
5 The A-Team $6.1 million
6 Get Him to the Greek $3 million
7 Shrek Forever After $2.9 million
8 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time $2.8
9 Killers $2 million
10 Jonah Hex $1.6 million
