Toy Story 4 is coming in 2017!
Don’t act like you didn’t see this one coming. Sure, the events of TOY STORY 3 kind of made it seem like the franchise was over since Andy was all grown up, but TOY STORY OF TERROR (click the link to read our review) showed us that there are still plenty of stories to tell with Bonnie. So when Disney CEO Bob Iger announced today at his shareholders meeting that TOY STORY 4 would be released on June 16th, 2017, I don’t think anyone was really surprised. But what might be surprising is that John Lasseter is going to be returning to the franchise to direct. It’s surprising because after his move to Chief Creative Officer at Pixar, most thought he would quit directing.
The other cool thing about TOY STORY 4 is that they’ve hired Rashida Jones (yes, the one from ‘Parks and Recreation’) and Will McCormack to write the script. The two previously wrote CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER and are basing TOY STORY 4 on an idea from the original big 4 at Pixar; Lasseter, Lee Unkrich, Pete Docter and Andrew Stanton. In a statement, John Lasseter said “We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. ‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.” So there you have it; TOY STORY 4 is coming to theaters on June 16th, 2017 and all of the cast members are presumably coming back.
