Tron Legacy and Yogi Bear top the weekend box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I don’t think anyone really knew what to expect from TRON: LEGACY, considering it’s opening 28 years after the first TRON came out.  But it turns out that the fan base is still there as the sequel has brought in just under $50 million to give it the top spot for this weekend.  Not bad for a bunch of neon lights.  The second place finisher at the box office was the horrible looking YOGI BEAR, which couldn’t even manage $20 million and it didn’t have much competition as far as kids movies.  So that basically means that kids had rather watch nothing than watch YOGI BEAR.  But the news of the weekend is the disappointing performance of HOW DO YOU KNOW, starring Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson and Paul Rudd, because it couldn’t grab $10 million.  A rom-com with that star power should have done better.

The best movie of the weekend was THE FIGHTER, which will probably pick up an audience later on when Oscar nominations are announced.  Next week sees the much anticipated release of TRUE GRIT, which was very good, but not the Oscar movie everyone wanted it to be.  The numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Tron Legacy

1. Tron: Legacy $43.6m

2. Yogi Bear $16.5m

3. The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader $12.6m

4. The Fighter $12.6m

5. Tangled $12.1m

6. How Do You Know $8.7m

7. Black Swan $9m

8. The Tourist $8.5m

9. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 $5.3m

10. Unstoppable $2m
