True Grit and Little Fockers battle for the weekend box office

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

In a race that’s almost too close to call, it looks like LITTLE FOCKERS will narrowly beat TRUE GRIT to be #1 at the box office this weekend.  It’s very possible that they will flip-flop spots once the final numbers are released on Monday, but right now it seems Fockers is going to win.  I have to say that I’m a little frustrated by the report that executives are “frustrated” and “disappointed” with this weekend’s returns.  In my mind, Hollywood should be thankful for every penny they got this weekend because audiences have one of the worst selections in movies at the theater in recent history.  This is what happens when you pin your financial hopes on a sequel no one wants and a Western.

Next week sees the opening of SEASON OF THE WITCH, which I was mildly interested in, but when it was announced they weren’t going to be screening it for critics, I kind of lost hope.  When studios refuse to let critics watch it, it almost always means the movie is horrible.  We’re going to have to wait until the following week to pick things up with THE GREEN HORNET and THE DILEMMA.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

Jeff Bridges in True Grit

1. Little Fockers $24m

2. True Grit $23.5m

3. Tron Legacy $18m

4. Yogi Bear $12.1m

5. Tangled $11m

6. Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader $10.5m

7. Gulliver’s Travels $10m

8. The Fighter $8.5m

9. The King’s Speech $7.5m

10. The Tourist $6m
