Twilight: Eclipse dominates the box office, but The Last Airbender does well

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

We’ve been updating the progress of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE over the past few days as it chases down various records.  But in case you weren’t aware, there were other movies playing at the theater this weekend as well.  One of them THE LAST AIRBENDER dis surprisingly well considering the competition at the box office.  The M. Night Shyamalan effort brought in $40 million, making it the most successful opening Shyamalan has had in quite a while.  TOY STORY 3 continued its impressive run with over $30 million.  And not to beat a dead horse, but JONAH HEX didn’t even make the top 20 this weekend, making it one of the most embarrassing box office performances in Hollywood history.

So the question remains: how long will Eclipse remain on top?  Next week sees the opening of PREDATORS, so its likely Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart can handle the R-rated action film.  But after that, it goes up against the high-concept INCEPTION with Leonardo DiCaprio, so it probably won’t last three weekends.
