Valentine's Day reigns supreme at the box office

For the past several years, I’ve found it odd that studios haven’t released a big time romantic comedy on Valentine’s Day weekend. There have even been a couple of years where there wasn’t a romantic movie at all playing at the theater. But leave it up to Garry Marshall to make a movie called Valentine’s Day and release it on Valentine’s Day. The trick worked as the film managed to rake in over $52 million at the box office. But V-day wasn’t the only new movie to do well. PERCY JACKSON took in over $31 million and the much delayed THE WOLFMAN grabbed over $30 million. Overall, I’d say it was an extremely successful box office weekend for the studios.
On the AVATAR watch, its total is now almost at $660 million as it took in another $22 million. It’s hard not to be impressed by that number. Next week sees he release of Leonardo Dicaprio’s SHUTTER ISLAND, which has also had a couple of delays.
1 Valentine’s Day $52,410,000
2 Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief $31,100,000
3 The Wolfman $30,627,000
4 Avatar $22,000,000
5 Dear John $15,300,000
6 Tooth Fairy $5,600,000
7 From Paris with Love $4,740,000
8 Edge of Darkness $4,585,000
9 Crazy Heart $4,000,000
10 When in Rome $3,429,00
