Watch the never before seen footage of Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in Back To The Future

BACK TO THE FUTURE is one of my all-time favorite films. I think people forget how great the original is because they only remember the sub-par (but still fun) sequels. But the original film is a classic. One of the things fans might have known about the film is that Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly. That seems sacrileges now, but if you transport yourself back to 1985, it doesn’t sound that unbelievable. Stoltz had a few movies under his belt and a ton of television experience, so the decision made sense. But five weeks into shooting, Stoltz was replaced by Michael J. Fox. Until now, all we heard from Zemeckis and Spielberg was that “he just wasn’t right” and we couldn’t get an elaboration as to why exactly they switched actors five weeks into filming.
But thank goodness for Blu-rays and DVD’s. On the upcoming BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy that will hit shelves on October 26th, Zemeckis and Spielberg sit down and talk about the decision and even show us some footage of Stoltz as McFly. We’ve seen pictures like the one above, but this is the first time we’ve seen actual footage. They basically say it was his comedic timing, or lack thereof, that prompted the decision.
