Weekend box office: 10 Cloverfield Lane can’t stop Zootopia

A lot of credit has to be given to the marketing team behind 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE.  Most people weren’t even aware the film existed until a couple of months ago and when we learned, we all groaned at the idea of making a pseudo-sequel to CLOVERFIELD.  In many ways, it looked like 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE had nothing to do with the original and the studio was hoping to cash in on a recognizable name.  But somewhere in the skepticism a decent movie emerged and fans actually showed up to the tune of nearly $25 million at the weekend box office.  But that wasn’t enough to beat out ZOOTOPIA, which doubled that number.  But the news wasn’t all good for the new movies this weekend since THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY failed miserably with less than $5 million.  Maybe everyone is sick of Sacha Baron Cohen?

Next week sees the third film in the Divergent saga, THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT.  Honestly, this series should feel lucky to have had one sequel let alone two, but they keep churning them out.  We also get the faith based film MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN starring Jennifer Garner and the new Jeff Nichols film MIDNIGHT SPECIAL starring Adam Driver and Joel Edgerton.  The Divergent films usually do better overseas than in the US and I expect that to be especially true with the third film.  Faith based films are risky bets because sometimes the church going crowds show up in spades and sometimes they don’t.  I think MIDNIGHT SPECIAL looks really good, but it’s not the kind of movie that appeals to the masses and it’s not a good sign the studio is dumping it in early spring.  My money is on ZOOTOPIA to repeat again because none of the new films are going to eat into the kids market.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Zootopia $51m

2. 10 Cloverfield Lane $24.7m

3. Deadpool $10.4m

4. London Has Fallen $10.3m

7. The Perfect Match $3.7m

8. The Brothers Grimsby $3.3m
