Weekend box office: 2 Guns beats out The Wolverine and The Smurfs 2

Weekend box office, Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns

I don’t think there are a whole lot of conclusions you can draw from 2 GUNS (click the link to read our review) winning the weekend box office, but if you needed any more proof that Denzel Washington is one of the most consistent actors of all time, then hopefully this will settle it for you. I think Denzel, more than almost any actor, has earned a certain amount of trust with audiences and everyone knows that he’s going to give them a good movie. So that, coupled with Mark Wahlberg’s normal appeal made for a pretty successful action-comedy. I think we should already start planning for a sequel. THE SMURFS 2 didn’t fare quite as well and it looks like it will pull in about half of the original’s $38 million. I think most people agreed that the sequel was slightly better than the first, but when the first was so bad, I wouldn’t consider that high praise.

Next week is pretty much the last reprieve before the dark season begins for movies. Luckily, we’ll get one of my most anticipated movies of the summer, ELYSIUM, to bid us farewell until the Oscar movies hit theaters. I’m anxious to see how well ELYSIUM does in theaters since it could be argued that the summer movie season has been saturated with science fiction films. There are a couple of family oriented films opening up as well, including PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS and Disney’s PLANES. It almost feels like Disney is trying to forget they even made that film. My money is on ELYSIUM to grab the top spot, but I definitely don’t think it’s a sure thing. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. 2 Guns $27.3m

2. The Wolverine $21.7m

3. The Smurfs 2 $18.2m

4. The Conjuring $13.6m

5. Despicable Me 2 $10.4m

6. Grown-Ups 2 $8.1m

7. Turbo $6.4m

8. Red 2 $5.6m

9. The Heat $4.7m

10. Pacific Rim $4.6m
