Weekend box office: After Earth and Now You See Me can't beat Fast & Furious 6

Weekend box office: After Earth

AFTER EARTH has been this Hollywood train wreck in the making for well over a year.  Somehow, the combination of Will Smith, Jaden Smith and M. Night Shyamalan never sounded like it would work on paper and when the first trailer hit, I think everyone knew it was going to be a disaster.  So it’s no surprise that AFTER EARTH (click the link to read our review) barely managed a third place opening at the weekend box office, not even able to beat out the Jesse Eisenberg led NOW YOU SEE ME.  Is this the end for Will Smith?  Probably not.  He’ll sign on for another light action movie where he can go back to being his usual charming self and his career will instantly be back on track.  If anything, AFTER EARTH might be proof of his star power since it’s impressive this badly reviewed film is coming close to a $30 million opening.  As for Jaden Smith, KARATE KID seems like a long time ago.  The real question is what will this do for M. Night Shyamalan; studios will eventually have to stop hoping he can recreate the success of THE SIXTH SENSE.

Next week sees the release of the Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson comedy THE INTERNSHIP, which might have been a success if they had gone with an R rating.  I’m just not sure anyone wants to see a toned down Vaughn and Wilson comedy.  We also have the very interesting looking horror drama, THE PURGE and Joss Whedon’s Shakespeare take with MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Fast and Furious 6 $34.5m

2. Now You See Me $28m

3. After Earth $27m

4. Epic $16.4m

5. Star Trek Into Darkness $16.4m

6. The Hangover Part III $15.9m

7. Iron Man 3 $8m

8. The Great Gatsby $6.2m

9. The Croods $.6m

10. Frances Ha $.5m
