Weekend box office: American Made, The Kingsman and It all battle for the top spot
Tom Cruise’s latest effort, AMERICAN MADE (click the link to read our review), has gotten great reviews, but those reviews haven’t translated into box office success like I’m sure Universal would like. The film is on pace for just over $16 million at the weekend box office, which puts it in a three way tie for first. Good word of mouth is on its side, though and the general thought is that it will inch ahead by the end of the day on Sunday. The other new movies of the week don’t have much to brag about, with FLATLINERS barely able to crack the top five. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone since no one was asking for a FLATLINERS remake that offered nothing new to the idea. But even more disappointing is BATTLE OF THE SEXES, which is barely looking at a $3 million opening. I figured with Emma Stone and Steve Carell in the lead, Sexes would have been able to do more. It will be interesting to see if that opening will tank its Oscar chances.
If early reviews are any indication, next week should clearly belong to BLADE RUNNER 2049. Critics have a way with hyperbole, but most are calling it a brilliant masterpiece. We’ll see if audiences respond to it with ticket sales. The other new movie opening is THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US with Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. It has an interesting premise, but I’m not sure it will do much damage at the weekend box office. BLADE RUNNER 2049 should easily take the top spot and I’m guessing AMERICAN MADE will come in second thanks to the strong word of mouth. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. American Made $16.5m
2. Kingsman: The Golden Circle $16.4m
3. It $16m
4. The LEGO Ninjago Movie $11.5m

6. Battle of the Sexes $3.4m
7. American Assassin $3.2m
8. Home Again $1.7m
9. Til Death Due Us Part $1.4m
