Weekend box office: Ant-Man and the Wasp easily take the top spot

Unlike the Star Wars films, Marvel has different tiers of movies in the eyes of critics and box office pundits.  So while SOLO pulls in $100 million on its opening weekend and is considered a massive failure, ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (click the link to read our review) brings in $80 million at the weekend box office and is considered a huge success.  Sure, SOLO cost a lot more, but the point is that the argument can easily be made that a standalone “Ant-Man” film is to Marvel what a standalone Han Solo film is to Star Wars.  But I digress.  The point here is that ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is doing better than the original by about $23 million and proves yet again that Marvel knows what they’re doing.  The other new movie of the weekend was THE FIRST PURGE, which came in fourth place and that either proves that audiences were starved for a horror movie or that the Purge franchise is going to go on forever.

Next week will be the first real battle at the top of the weekend box office when Dwayne Johnson’s SKYSCRAPER faces off against Adam Sandler’s HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3.  Neither film has a lot going for it since SKYSCRAPER looks terrible and HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 not only looks terrible but is going to have to pull an audience away from INCREDIBLES 2, which happens to be the biggest Pixar movie of all time.  This is a tough one to call, but my guess is that SKYSCRAPER will just narrowly beat out ANT-MAN AND THE WASP and HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 will narrowly slip by INCREDIBLES.  But it’s going to be close on both accounts.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Ant-Man and the Wasp $81.5m

2. Incredibles 2 $31m

3. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom $30.7m

4. The First Purge $16.9m

5. Sicario: Day of the Soldado $7.6m

6. Uncle Drew $7.7m

7. Ocean’s 8 $5.8m

8. Tag $2.9m

9. Won’t You be my Neighbor $2.6m

10. Deadpool 2 $1.6m
