Weekend box office: Avengers: Infinity War dominates as expected
Whenever it comes to record breaking openings, studios want to be cautious with their estimates. If they predict a record opening at the weekend box office and something goes wrong on Sunday, then their uber-successful movie looks like a failure because it didn’t live up to estimates. That’s kind of what’s going on with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (click the link to read our review). Right now, it’s expected to bring in around $237 million, which is a convenient $10 million shy of the record owned by STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. But a lot of pundits are predicting more than $250 million for Infinity War, which would give it the clear record. Given the good word of mouth from fans and critics alike and the excitement surrounding the film, my guess is that this one will break the record. But this is one that’s really too close to call until Monday afternoon, when all of the numbers are in. Obviously, nothing wanted to compete with Infinity War, so no other new movies opened against it.
Next week is going to be more of the same. Again, nothing wants to compete with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, so there are no major studio releases to speak of. The closest thing is the Anna Faris remake of OVERBOARD. Clearly, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR will take the top spot again, probably with well over $100 million. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
UPDATE: And already it looks like the $237 million estimate was too conservative. It looks like $250 million is the new estimate, but I’m guessing it will change again when the final numbers come in.
1. Avengers: Infinity War $250m
2. A Quiet Place $10m
3. I Feel Pretty $7.9m
4. Rampage $6.8m
5. Black Panther $3.8m
6. Super Troopers 2 $3.2m
7. Truth or Dare $3m
8. Blockers $2.9m
9. Ready Player One $2.6m
10. Traffik $1.7m
