Weekend box office: Avengers: Infinity War keeps going strong

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is going to get a lot of credit for having the second highest second weekend box office total ever (behind STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS), but honestly, my attention is drawn toward the $13 million opening at the weekend box office of OVERBOARD.  I know that kind of sounds like I’m making fun of the film, but I’m actually trying to give it some credit.  It’s a remake of an 80’s comedy led by a B-level actress with no other big draws in the cast, opening against the second weekend of the biggest movie of all time.  And it managed an eight figure opening.  That’s pretty impressive in my book.  As for the Avengers, well, I’m not sure that ending lends itself to repeat viewings, so I don’t think there’s any way it will break any all time gross records.  But when you’ve made $400 million in 10 days, I guess it doesn’t matter.  The only other new movie was the Charlize Theron starring TULLY, which opened in sixth place.

Next week is another lackluster week with only LIFE OF THE PARTY hitting theaters.  The film is essentially a remake of the old Rodney Dangerfield movie BACK TO SCHOOL, but Melissa McCarthy seems to be making the rounds with all of the normal comedies.  The film should have an easy path to the number two spot at the weekend box office, but it probably won’t have a prayer of beating out AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.  But Infinity War won’t be able to hold on much longer since DEADPOOL 2 opens on May 18th.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Avengers: Infinity War $115.1m

2. Overboard $13.1m

3. A Quiet Place $7.4m

4. I Feel Pretty $5.2m

5. Rampage $4.6m

6. Tully $3.5m

7. Black Panther $3.3m

8. Truth or Dare $1.8m

9. Bad Samaritan $1.8m

10. Super Troopers 2 $1.8m
