Weekend box office: Captain Marvel continues to fly high
Predictably, CAPTAIN MARVEL soared to the top of the box office in its second weekend, easily taking the top spot. What might be somewhat more surprising is that it took in close to $70 million at the weekend box office in its second weekend, giving it one of the best second weeks ever. It may have felt like critics and fans were torn on just how good CAPTAIN MARVEL (click the link to read our review) was, but that still didn’t translate to low box office totals. Much to the trolls’ chagrin, Marvel has yet another massive hit on their hands. The other new movies of the weekend did okay, with the animated WONDER PARK leading the pack and the star-less FIVE FEET APART doing well in third place. NO MANCHES FRIDA and CAPTIVE STATE struggled a bit, but feel more like the kind of movies that will do better on home video.
Next week will be a telling week for Jordan Peele. The do-it-all star shocked everyone with the success of GET OUT and is following that up with US. The film feels like it’s in the same genre as his first film, but the question will be whether or not audiences will show up to see what Peele has in store for…us. Anyway, the film should challenge CAPTAIN MARVEL for the top spot and it should make for a good race. The other new movie of the weekend is HOTEL MUMBAI, which looks good, but doesn’t look like the kind of movie that will do well in theaters. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
