Weekend box office: Crazy Rich Asians continues its crazy run

I don’t think anyone would disagree that CRAZY RICH ASIANS is the feel good Hollywood story of the summer.  Warner Bros. big gamble paid off in a big way and should continue for a few more weeks and then make a nice run on home video.  The good news for the Jon M. Chu film continued over Labor Day weekend as the film continued to bring in the dough with another $30 million at the weekend box office, which was more than double the next challenger.  Granted, it was greatly helped by not having decent competition, but it’s impressive nonetheless.  The only other new film was OPERATION FINALE, which couldn’t crack $10 million.

Next week is another late summer random dumping ground for Hollywood.  First up is the horror film THE NUN, which has an advantage since it will be the only horror movie at the box office.  The question will be whether the marketing for THE NUN is strong enough to get it to the top spot.  The other new movie is the Jennifer Garner as John Wick film PEPPERMINT.  Garner rose to prominence in the TV show ‘Alias’, so she’s going back to her roots to try to resurrect her film career.  The trailers actually look pretty fun, so maybe she can pull it off.  Given the two weak newcomers, I think CRAZY RICH ASIANS should take the to spot again, even though as a general rule I don’t bet against horror movies.  But in this case, I think the CRAZY RICH ASIANS train is still going strong.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final and are for the four day holiday weekend.

1. Crazy Rich Asians $30m

2. The Meg $13m

3. Operation Finale $8.3m

4. Mission: Impossible – Fallout $8.2m
