Weekend box office: Daddy’s Home 2 and Murder on the Orient Express battle for 2nd place
I had to look up how much DADDY’S HOME made on it’s opening weekend and I was surprised to see it pulled in $38 million. So learning that DADDY’S HOME 2 is on track to pull in $27 million at the weekend box office isn’t so surprising. But I think everyone involved with the film should be pleased with that opening and since there’s a serious lack of competition in the coming weeks, especially for comedies, the film should continue to bring an audience for several weeks. The other new movie of the weekend was MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (click the link to read our review). I’ve been down on this film since the first trailer, but the movie is doing surprisingly well and might actually end up beating DADDY’S HOME 2 for second place. However, they’re still very far behind the $54 million or so that THOR: RAGNAROK is making in its second weekend.
Next week should be fascinating for both fans and detractors of the DC Universe. We get the long awaited release of JUSTICE LEAGUE. It feels like watching a bad car accident in that you really want to see how bad it is but still hope no one gets hurt. Between the reshoots, rumors of behind the scenes chaos and bringing on a new director, I don’t see how the finished product will be anything but disappointing. But I actually have hope that DC will surprise us and JUSTICE LEAGUE will be a fun movie. We also get the release of WONDER and ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ. Neither will do much at the box office, but they might have a chance come Oscar season. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Thor: Ragnarok $54.1m
2. Murder on the Orient Express $27.8m
