Weekend box office: Despicable Me 2 soars while The Lone Ranger flops

Steve Carell in Despicable Me 2

Once again, the story of the weekend isn’t necessarily the success of a particular movie, but rather the failure of another.  In this case, DESPICABLE ME 2 (click the link to read our review) grabbed the top spot at the weekend box office, as expected.  The first movie was a surprise hit and the sequel was a highly marketed summer movie aimed at kids; that’s not rocket science.  The failure of the weekend belongs to Disney’s THE LONE RANGER, starring Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp.  That’s not really a surprise either since everyone that followed the movie early on said that it was too pedestrian and too expensive and had little chance of making back its budget.  And for those wanting to blame Johnny Depp, I wouldn’t go that far just yet.  In my opinion, you can owe every penny of that nearly $50 million opening to Johnny Depp.  And Disney gave it everything had in terms of marketing, the public just didn’t respond, even with a quirky Johnny Depp.

Next week is another interesting weekend.  We have Guillermo Del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM, which seems made specifically for fanboys, but is getting slammed in early reviews, making me think it’s destined for disaster.  We also have GROWN UPS 2 and I keep saying Adam Sandler is done, but every time I do, he goes and makes another successful film.  The first GROWN UPS was almost unwatchable, so I don’t know why anyone would go see the sequel, but I’m sure it will do fine.  Note: the numbers below are for the 3 day estimates and will be updated as they become final.

1. Despicable Me 2 $81m ($140.5m 5 day total)

2. The Lone Ranger $28.9m ($48.5m 5 day total)
