Weekend box office: Dumb and Dumber To challenges Big Hero 6
The weekend box office still needs some time to settle down, but right now it looks like DUMB AND DUMBER TO is going to take the top spot. And whether or not it takes the top spot from BIG HERO 6 is irrelevant because the fact that the film is going to make nearly $35 million on its opening weekend is just insane. That’s more than double what the original film managed to take in over 20 years ago. I honestly didn’t think there was still an audience for a DUMB AND DUMBER sequel, but America has proved me wrong. Of course, I don’t think the film will have much staying power, but still, Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels and the Farrelly Brothers should be partying tonight because they have a legitimate hit on their hands. The other new film of the week was BEYOND THE LIGHTS, which also did pretty well considering it had no recognizable stars and no huge studio pushing it. Overall, it was a surprising weekend.
Next week sees the anticipated release of THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1. And the question isn’t whether or not the film will do well, but whether or not it’s going to shatter all of the November opening records. Wisely, Hollywood decided to avoid opening anything of relevance against The Hunger Games juggernaut, knowing that next weekend will belong to the franchise as no one will be able to escape it. So the question is what will come in second place and I think that belongs to BIG HERO 6 since it will be the only thing available for those that are too young to see The Hunger Games. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Dumb and Dumber To $38m
2. Big Hero 6 $36m
3. Interstellar $29.2m
4. Beyond the Lights $6.5m
5. Gone Girl $4.6m
6. St. Vincent $4m
7. Fury $3.8m
8. Ouija $3.1m

10. Birdman $2.5m
