Weekend box office: Elysium, We're The Millers, Percy Jackson and Planes all do well
It’s a close battle for the top spot at the weekend box office, but it looks like the Matt Damon science fiction thriller ELYSIUM is going to end up at #1. The Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis starring comedy WE’RE THE MILLERS is also doing well, which I guess proves that if you market a film around your A-list actress stripping, you can expect a decent showing at the box office. Disney’s CARS spin-off PLANES also had a decent showing, despite the nationwide groan that Disney is continuing to milk the CARS franchise. Finally, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS looks like it will finish around $15 million, which is less than half of the original film’s $38 million. Logan Lerman has his legions of die-hard (crazy?) fans, so I won’t dare speak ill of him, but I think we all saw a disappointing showing at the box office for the Percy Jackson sequel.
Next week is traditionally the start of the box office doldrums, but we do have a couple of possible gems. First, we have KICK-ASS 2, which to this point is better known for Jim Carrey’s refusal to promote it since it’s violent. But audiences seemed to get a kick out of the first KICK-ASS, so the sequel might do well. We also have LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER, which has been in the news lately because of the title controversy. Liam Hemsworth stars in PARANOIA with Harrison Ford and then there’s Ashton Kutcher’s JOBS. The best movie opening probably won’t get seen and that’s AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS, which I’m guessing will pick up steam come awards season. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Elysium $30.4m
2. We’re The Millers $26.4m
3. Planes $22.5m
4. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters $14.6m
