Weekend box office: The Fault in Our Stars beats Edge of Tomorrow

Weekend box office The Fault in Our Stars

Judging by how excited a lot of women in my life were to see THE FAULT IN OUR STARS (click the link to read our review), I figured the movie would be a success.  But I definitely didn’t see this coming.  The drama managed to score the top spot at the weekend box office, knocking off last week’s #1 film MALEFICENT and beating out Tom Cruise’s latest actioner, EDGE OF TOMORROW.  The Shailine Woodley starring film will finish with close to $50 million on its opening weekend, which is quite a haul for a smaller, tear-jerker drama.  Given the subject matter, I can’t see it bringing in a lot of repeat viewers, but what an amazing opening.  EDGE OF TOMORROW didn’t do bad and the film will still finish with about $30 million.  The film has been very well received by fans and critics and is cleaning up overseas, so I think the film will hang around for the next few weeks.

Next week sees the release of 22 JUMP STREET and early reviews say it’s even better than the first one, which is saying quite a lot.  But we also get HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2, which should easily dominate the weekend box office.  Everyone loved the first one and since there aren’t any animated kids movies to provide competition, the sky is the limit for the Dreamworks sequel.  Robert Pattinson’s latest film, THE ROVER, also hits theaters and although it won’t do anything at the box office, it will be nice to see how R-Patz does so far removed from Twilight.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. The Fault in Our Stars $48m

2. Maleficent $33.5m

3. Edge of Tomorrow $29.1m

4. X-Men: Days of Future Past $14.7m

5. A Million Ways To Die In The West $7.2m

6. Godzilla $5.9m

7. Neighbors $5.2m

8. Blended $4m

9. Chef $2.6m

10. Million Dollar Arm $1.8m
