Weekend box office: Frozen and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire continue their battle

Weekend box office Frozen

Last week, THE HUNGER GAMES CATCHING FIRE and Disney’s FROZEN battled for number one at the weekend box office and this weekend is more of the same.  Except this time, it looks like FROZEN is going to narrowly take the top spot away from Catching Fire.  But this weekend is also a battle of several Oscar hopefuls, with The Coen Bros.’ INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS opening up in a limited release and doing extremely well and the Judi Dench starring PHILOMENA is also still doing well.  Both films should get some Oscar nominations, but I’m guessing INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS could emerge as a frontrunner for Oscar glory.  The new wide release of the weekend, OUT OF THE FURNACE, isn’t faring so well.  The film has gotten a cold reception from critics and fans alike, who were hoping for more from a film starring Christian Bale and Casey Affleck.

Next week sees the release of THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG and if there’s one movie this holiday season I’m interested to see the box office numbers for, it’s the Hobbit sequel.  The first one wasn’t received very well, but I suspect the same people that went to see the first one in theaters will make it out to see the sequel.  The trailers make it look a lot more involving and exciting, so I still think it will do better than the first.  We also get TYLER PERRY’S A MADEA CHRISTMAS, which might take the second spot, given the lack of holiday themed movies and the crazy success Tyler Perry’s films typically have.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Frozen $31.6m

2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $27m

3. Out of the Furnace $5.3m

4. Thor: The Dark World $4.7m

5. Delivery Man $3.7m

6. Home Front $3.4m

7. The Book Thief $2.7m

8. The Best Man Holiday $2.6m

9. Philomena $2.3m

10. Dallas Buyer’s Club $1.5m
