Weekend box office: Frozen and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire set records

Weekend box office Frozen

It seems when people weren’t feasting on Turkey or battling their fellow bargain hunters this Thanksgiving holiday, they were at the movie theater.  Both THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE and FROZEN are taking in quite a huge haul and both films are on pace to break the 5 day Thanksgiving weekend box office total, with Catching Fire taking the slight advantage.  We all knew Catching Fire would be a juggernaut at the box office, but some credit has to go to Disney animation for making a quality film without Pixar.  FROZEN seems to be a hit with both critics and moviegoers alike, which usually means a long and successful box office run.  FROZEN’s success should make the animated Best Picture race interesting.  Meanwhile, a couple of Oscar movies opened up as well, including THE BOOK THIEF (click the link to read our review) and PHILOMENA, but neither of them broke $10 million.  And Jason Statham continued his disappointing box office run with HOMEFRONT bringing in just over $8 million.

Next week sees the release of two early Oscar hopefuls.  First, we have Christian Bale and Casey Affleck in OUT OF THE FURNACE.  The film looks great, but early festival reviews were disappointing, so we’ll see how it does at the box office.  We also get The Coen Bros.’ INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, which clearly appeals to a very niche audience.  But the film debuted to almost unanimously positive reviews, so it may be one that could get a re-release if it gets some nominations.  Note: the numbers below will be updates as they become final.  The total 5 day numbers:

1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $110m

2. Frozen $90m

3. Thor: The Dark World $14.4m

4. The Best Man Holiday $11.8m

5. Delivery Man $8.8m

6. Home Front $8.7m

7. The Book Thief $6m

8. Black Nativity $5m

9. Philomena $4m

10. Last Vegas $3.6m
