Weekend box office: Furious 7 is still going strong

FURIOUS 7 winning the weekend box office is not really news.  After all, the film came out at a perfect time since there has been no competition for the last couple of weeks.  But what is news is PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2 opening to over $20 million.  That’s just crazy to me.  For those thinking the world is spinning out of control, let me remind you that the original PAUL BLART opened to over $31 million.  So maybe it’s a slight consolation that the terrible sequel to a terrible movie didn’t do as well as the original.  However, I can’t imagine the studio not greenlighting a PAUL BLART: MALL COP 3.  Opening to over $20 million without having to invest in silly things like a script or a supporting cast is just good business.  The other new movie of the weekend was the “horror” film UNFRIENDED, which had a nice gimmick and a ton of online advertising and it paid off to the tune of over $16 million.  I assume that’s pretty close to how much the movie cost to make, so it wouldn’t shock me to see a sequel to that as well.

Next week is another downer at the weekend box office.  We have the Blake Lively starring THE AGE OF ADALINE, which doesn’t look terrible, but I can’t see it doing great at the box office.  We also have Russell Crowe’s directing debut THE WATER DIVINER as well as LITTLE BOY.  So in other words, it should be another easy victory for FURIOUS 7 and it will also mark the last of the slow weekends since the weekend after next kicks off the summer movie season.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Furious 7 $29m
