Weekend box office: Grown-Ups 2 beats out Pacific Rim

Weekend box office Grown-ups 2

The last time I ranted about how sad it was that a completely unoriginal, poorly scripted, unfunny comedy could actually win the weekend box office, I had some commenters actually defend the movie in question and that just made me feel more depressed.  In the case of GROWN-UPS 2, it’s not so much that it beat PACIFIC RIM (click the link to read our review) at the weekend box office, it’s that the film is going to pull in over $40 million.  I know you should never bet against Adam Sandler, but that’s an insane haul for a sequel to a terrible film.  I’m still in amazement of Adam Sandler and his continued ability to pack theaters despite not making anyone laugh since 1996.  PACIFIC RIM seemed destined for failure for a while, but when it’s all said and done, the Guillermo del Toro directed film will flirt with a $40 million opening, which isn’t bad for a movie about giant robots battling giant aliens that doesn’t have any A-list stars.

Next week sees the release of RED 2, R.I.P.D. and the animated TURBO.  R.I.P.D. has been trashed by every critic that has seen it early and Ryan Reynolds doesn’t exactly have the best track record at the weekend box office, so I can’t put too much stock into R.I.P.D.  RED 2 is an interesting situation since I didn’t think the first one was good enough to merit a sequel and I’m not sure audiences like Bruce Willis like they used to.  As for TURBO, I think if kids want to see a movie next weekend, they’re going to go see DESPICABLE ME 2 again.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Despicable Me 2 $44.7m

2. Grown-Ups 2 $42.5m

3. Pacific Rim $38.3m

4. The Heat $14m

5. The Lone Ranger $11.1m

6. Monsters University $10.6m

7. World War Z $9.4m

8. White House Down $6.1m

9. Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain $5m

10. Man of Steel $4.8m
