Weekend box office: Heaven is For Real beats Transcendence

Heaven is For Real

With four religious movies (assuming you count NOAH as “religious”) dominating the weekend box office the last couple of months, I can’t help but think Hollywood is going to have their next bandwagon to jump on.  The big news this weekend was the adaptation of the popular book, HEAVEN IS FOR REAL.  Depending on how well you follow Johnny Depp, you may or may not be surprised that the indie religious drama beat out his latest film, TRANSCENDENCE.  The problem with Johnny Depp’s performance in TRANSCENDENCE was that he wasn’t in full costume and make-up, so audiences weren’t interested.  Depp’s career is one of the more fascinating careers in Hollywood history since the guy can’t find a hit without playing a crazy character.  The other new movie of the weekend, A HAUNTED HOUSE 2, also struggled, not even matching the original’s $18 million opening.

Next week is the calm before the storm that’s sure to be THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and we only have a few titles that feel like they should have been released earlier in the year.  First up is THE OTHER WOMAN, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton.  It feels like a movie targeted towards females, but every woman I’ve ever met hates Kate Upton, so I’m not sure how that’s going to work out.  We also have the English language remake of D13, called BRICK MANSIONS, starring the late Paul Walker.  I love the original D13 movies, but I can’t say I’m excited about an English language remake.  Finally, we have the thriller THE QUIET ONES starring Jared Harris.  Despite the new movies, it looks like CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER should take the top spot again.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier $26.5m

2. Rio 2 $22.5m

3. Heaven is For Real $21.5m

4. Transcendence $11.7m

5. A Haunted House 2 $8.8m

6. Draft Day $5.9m

7. Divergent $5.8m

8. Oculus $5.2m

9. Bears $4.8m

10. God’s Not Dead $4.5m
