Weekend box office: Hidden Figures is on top while Rogue One finally falls
This always seems to be the time of year where pundits start questioning what’s going wrong at the weekend box office. But it makes sense that movies would struggle a few weeks after Christmas and without a big name movie, people don’t have much reason to get out of their houses. LA LA LAND saw a nice uptick thanks to cleaning up the awards at the Golden Globes, but all of the new movies struggled, including Jamie Fox’s SLEEPLESS and the terrible looking MONSTER TRUCKS. That paved the way for HIDDEN FIGURES to take the top spot, easily beating out the horror movie THE BYE BYE MAN. THE BYE BYE MAN actually did pretty well given the lack of marketing, but still not enough for the top spot.
Next week sees the return of Vin Diesel as Xander Cage in XXX: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE. I thought the first XXX was absolutely terrible, but I’m interested to see how the third one (second with Diesel) does at the box office. Diesel has struggled to carry any film without “fast” or “furious” in the title, but going back to a franchise might do him some good. We also get the latest from M. Night Shyamalan, SPLIT, which looks like another misfire from Shyamalan. Finally, there’s THE FOUNDER with Michael Keaton. At one point, that was looking like an Oscar frontrunner, but that talk seems to have died down. My guess is that XXX: THE RETURN OF XANDER CAGE takes the top spot next week. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final and are for the three day weekend.
