Weekend box office: The Hitman’s Bodyguard makes it three in a row

I’ve always felt that Labor Day weekend was the missed opportunity in Hollywood.  It’s a three day weekend where no one really wants to travel and yet it’s rare to have anything decent at the theater.  This weekend is no different as Hollywood didn’t even bother releasing anything new.  Instead, they re-released CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, which did nothing, and called it a day.  So of course, THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD made it three weekends in a row, basically duplicating the numbers from last weekend.

Next week sees the long awaited release of IT.  The Stephen King adaptation has been brewing for many years and fans will finally get to see if it was worth the wait.  Early reviews call it terrifyingly scary, so audiences might get what they wanted after all.  IT should have no problem taking the top spot given the lack of competition, with the only movie giving it a run being the Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy HOME AGAIN.  I’m not sure Witherspoon can open a rom-com anymore, but I would expect HOME AGAIN to at least take the second spot.  Note: the numbers below are for the three day weekend and will be updated as they become final.

1. The Hitman’s Bodyguard $9.4m

2. Annabelle: Creation $6.9m

3. Wind River $5.4m

4. Leap! $4.1m

5. Logan Lucky $4.1m

6. Dunkirk $3.8m

7. Spider-Man: Homecoming $3m

8. The Emoji Movie $2m

9. Despicable Me 3 $2m

10. Girls Trip $2.1m
