Weekend box office: Home and Get Hard do well
All of the talk and focus this weekend was on the blatant racist, homophobic nature of the Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart comedy GET HARD. Some people were seriously offended while others understand it’s just a stupid comedy and maybe people are a little too sensitive. But regardless of where you stand, the movie managed to open to over $30 million at the weekend box office, which was good enough for second place. The number one spot belongs to the Dreamworks Animation film HOME, which opened to a whopping $50 million plus. That’s quite an opening for a film a lot of people hadn’t even heard of, which just goes to show you; when there’s no competition at the box office, an animated kids movie can always clean up. And since HOME won’t have any competition until INSIDE OUT opens in mid-June, it’s probably going to continue to do well for the next couple of months. And how sad is it that Hollywood is only releasing an animated movie every couple of months during prime movie going season?
Next week will completely belong to FURIOUS 7. Early estimates have the film opening to well over $100 million, which will make it the perfect movie to kick off the summer box office season. I’m still amazed that the Fast and Furious franchise has lasted 7 films and only continues to make more money with each film. We also get WOMAN IN GOLD, which has zero chance of competing with FURIOUS 7 and the best it can hope for is that it will attract all the grandparents that are taking their grandkids to the movies. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Home $54m
2. Get Hard $34.6m
3. The Divergent Series: Insurgent $22m
4. Cinderella $17.5m
5. It Follows $4m
6. Kingsman: The Secret Service $3m
7. Run All Night $2.2m
8. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $2.18m
9. Do You Believe $2.1m
10. The Gunman $2m
