Weekend box office: Inside Out can’t beat Jurassic World

A lot of us were ready to write Pixar off as being past their golden years.  CARS 2, BRAVE and even MONSTERS UNIVERSITY were shadows of some of their greatest hits.  But then we get INSIDE OUT and once again we’re reminded of how brilliant the team at Pixar is.  Although many people speak in hyperbole when it comes to recent releases, a lot of critics are hailing INSIDE OUT (click the link to read our review) as their greatest achievement.  Thankfully, audiences agreed as the film pulled in over $80 million at the weekend box office.  As good of an opening that is, it wasn’t good enough to beat JURASSIC WORLD in its second weekend, which is on track to grab more than $100 million.  It wasn’t that long ago that it was rare for a film to hit $100 million on it’s opening weekend and now we’re in a world where films hit that in their second weekend.

Next week sees the release of TED 2 with Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried.  I’ll be anxious to see how it does at the weekend box office.  The original was a surprise hit, but I’m not sure the trailers for the sequel are doing it any favors.  We also get the release of the tear-jerker MAX about a war hero dog that returns home.  I don’t have to see it to know it’s going to make me cry the entire film.  I think we’re looking at more of the same next weekend with JURASSIC WORLD and INSIDE OUT taking the top two spots.  Both of them are just getting incredible word of mouth.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Jurassic World $106.8m

2. Inside Out $83m

3. Spy $9.7m

4. San Andreas $7.3m

5. Dope $5.9m

6. Insidious Chapter 3 $4.2m

7. Pitch Perfect 2 $3.9m

8. Mad Max: Fury Road $2.5m

9. Avengers: Age of Ultron $2.3m
