Weekend box office: Iron Man 3 does very well, but doesn't break any records

Weekend box office Iron Man 3

We all knew IRON MAN 3 would do well at the weekend box office, so the only question was just how well would it do. While some speculated it could bring in Avengers type money, I was less optimistic. Obviously, the success of the first two Iron Man films as well as the record breaking success of THE AVENGERS would mean big things for IRON MAN 3 (click the link to read our review) and it managed to capitalize on the hype to the tune of almost $175 million. To put it in perspective, the first IRON MAN made $98 million, IRON MAN 2 made $128 million and THE AVENGERS made $207 million. So IRON MAN 3 is doing quite well. Where it’s really cleaning up is overseas, where it has made a whopping $388 million. So yeah, anything you read that says there won’t be an IRON MAN 4, you can just ignore. You can say a lot of things about Disney, but one thing that’s absolutely true is that they love money. And as long as Iron Man is making it, there will be Iron Man movies.

Next week continues the summer movie season with the delayed release of THE GREAT GATSBY. The Leonardo DiCaprio starring film has been gaining steam recently with the great soundtrack and hip trailers, so it will be interesting to see how well the film does. I’m guessing it will do well, but it probably won’t be able to dethrone IRON MAN 3, especially with the good word of mouth IRON MAN 3 is getting. I think we’ll probably have to wait until STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS debuts the following week to see a new #1. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Iron Man 3 $175m

2. Pain & Gain $7.6m

3. 42 $6.2m

4. Oblivion $5.8m

5. The Croods $4.2m

6. The Big Wedding $3.9m

7. Mud $2.9m

8. Oz The Great and Powerful $1.8m

9. Scary Movie 5 $1.4m

10. The Place Beyond The Pines $1.3m
